Dashavatar is a 2009 indian devotional megahit bollywood film directed by Prakash Jha based on the Hindu religious text, Bhagavad Gita. The movie stars Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgan, Uday Chopra and Arjun Rampal. The film tells the story of 10 incarnations of Lord Vishnu's avatars in human form who defend dharma against evil forces. It was filmed in 3D (using Dolby digital surround). The main story, set in the 7th century CE, begins with the war between the largest and most powerful kingdoms on earth; that of Dharma (represented by Amitabh Bachchan) and of Adharma (represented by Uday Chopra). Still known as Rama, Rama had reigned as King of Ayodhya for 100 years before being sent into exile. He returns to defeat Adharma and rescue his wife, Sita from Ravana. This he does by defeating his arch-rival Ravana's army on the battlefield. This event is followed by a peaceful reign under Rama prescribed by a religious guru named Ashwathama. The movie then skips to the 20th century. The film was released on 13 February 2009 in India, and on 4 March 2009 in the United Kingdom. It got mixed reviews but did average business at the box office. "Dashavatar" is being dubbed into Telugu as "Dashavtaram" and into Tamil as "Dashavathar".The film opened to positive response from critics. Subhash K. Jha gave 3 stars out of 5, stating, "Amitabh Bachchan is even more magnificent than before". He also praises Ajay Devgn for his performance, stating that his dialogue delivery is very impressive. However, he has criticized Uday Chopra stating that "He dithers so much he dangles". Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama gave it 3 out of 5 commenting, "On the whole, "Dashavatar" is an engrossing motion picture which highlights some relevant issues. More importantly, it gives credence to the fact that films can be made on subjects that are truly meaningful". According to him, Ajay Devgan delivers his best performance till date. Usha Lakra was nominated for Best Choreography at the 52nd Filmfare Awards South. The film was also released in 3D version which made it India's first 3D film. Although the film was technically well made, it did not do well in 3D theatres. The first week total collection of the film was approximately Rs. 21 crore (Rs. 210 million), while the second week became Rs. 12 crore (Rs. 120 million). During its first weekend, people were reportedly disappointed with the lack of depth and even complained about having to wear the 3D glasses during a dark scene in which Amitabh Bachchan is praying to Garuda on a high mountain pass. The film grossed a total of Rs 39 crores from India and from overseas markets, thus totaling at Rs 78 crores worldwide. cfa1e77820
